The marine capstan is an important equipment of the ship. It is the mechanical device that ensure the ship can sail normally.

Types of marine capstan

1.Due to the different application, the marine capstan is divided into anchor capstan and mooring capstan.

2.Based on the shape, it can be divided into vertical capstan and horizontal capstan.

3.According to the input power, it can be divided into electric capstan and hydraulic capstan.

Marine capstan internal working mechanism

The motor is drived by the electric power from the ship. So that the motor can run and make the drum to drive the capstan shaft. Then the shaft can drive the planetary gear to create powerful torque. The torque is then returned to the drum, which drives the marine capstan. 

There is a clutch between the motor and the reducer, which can be turned on and off by a handle. The brake unit is inside the drum, and when the rope tightened, the drum is automatically locked.

Technical performance requirements for the marine capstan

1.Under the mooring load, the marine capstan must have the ability to work continuously for 3 min at nominal speed.

2.The mooring load shall not exceed 33% of the breaking load of the designed rope.

3.The marine capstan control device should be able to withstand a mooring load of 1.5 times.

Marine capstan drum size

1. When the rope is round strand steel wire, the diameter of the drum shall not be less than 16 times the diameter of the rope.

2. If the design rope is made of Polyester or polyamide, and the diameter of the drum shall not be less than 6 times the diameter of the fiber ropes.

3. For polypropylene rope, the diameter of the drum shall not be less than 4 times the diameter of the fiber ropes.

In the process of using the Marine capstan，a lot of things need to be noticed. In order to avoid unnecessary damage to the marine capstan, please pay attention to below issues.

1. The marine capstan are strictly prohibited to be used for ascension or manned.

2. Do not work under full load for more than a minute, so as not to burn the motor.

3. When the motor overheat, please allow the motor to cool down and then continue the operation.  

4. It is recommended to use the moving pulley when the load exceeds 60% of the rated tension.
