HB53-3 Marine Epoxy Tie Paint

Product Description

HB53-3 Marine Epoxy Tie Paint

Product Introduction:

HB53-3 is a two‑pack epoxy tie coat specifically designed to serve as an intermediate layer between anticorrosive primers and antifouling topcoats. It provides excellent adhesion to both underlying and overlying coating systems, ensuring a strong, durable intercoat bond that enhances the overall performance of the complete coating scheme. This product is widely used in newbuilding, maintenance, and repair applications, offering reliable compatibility with a range of primers and antifoulings. With a VOC content of less than 410 g/L, it balances effective performance with practical application requirements.

The coating has a volume solids content of 52% ± 2% and dries to a matt finish. It is formulated to provide strong intercoat adhesion, preventing detachment or peeling between different coating layers. Its relatively low film thickness requirement makes it an efficient choice for intermediate coating applications.

Intended Uses:

HB53-3 is used as a tie coat between anticorrosive primers and antifouling paints. It is suitable for use in newbuilding construction, as well as for maintenance, repair, and on‑board touch‑up operations, helping to maintain the integrity of the coating system over time.

Mixing And Application:

The product is supplied with a mix ratio of 7:1 by volume (10:1 by mass). No induction period is required. For large‑scale work, airless spray is recommended, using a tip size of 0.38–0.53 mm and an output pressure of at least 17 MPa. Air spraying is also suitable, with a tip size of 2.0–3.0 mm and a minimum pressure of 0.4 MPa. Brush or roller application is acceptable only for small touch‑up areas. Thinner (HX‑501) is generally not recommended; if absolutely necessary, it should not exceed 5% of the total volume. Equipment cleaning should be done with HX‑501.

Surface Preparation:

All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, and free from contamination. HB53-3 should always be applied over a recommended primer coating system. The primer surface must be dry and free from all contaminants, and HB53-3 must be applied within the specified overcoating intervals (consult the relevant primer data sheet). For repair areas, clean mechanically to P St3 or blast to P Sa2.5 (GB/T 8923.2‑2008), abrade the surrounding edges to minimise overlap, and patch prime before applying HB53-3. Observe the overcoating intervals specified for the primer.

Application Limitations:

Application and curing should only be carried out at temperatures above 5°C; both substrate and coating material must be above this limit. Application should only proceed when relative humidity is below 85% and the substrate temperature is at least 3°C above the dew point. Avoid prolonged inhalation of solvent vapours and paint mist, and prevent skin/eye contact. Adequate ventilation and fire precautions must be maintained during use.

Storage and Packaging:

Store in a cool, dry, well‑ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and open flames. Containers must remain tightly closed. Shelf life is a minimum of 12 months at 25°C (subject to re‑inspection). Packaging: Part A – 24 kg / 17.5 L in a 20 L container; Part B – 2.4 kg / 2.5 L in a 6 L container. Flash point for Part A, Part B, and the mixed paint is all above 28°C.
