HB53-5 Universal Epoxy Tie Paint
Product Description
HB53-5 Universal Epoxy Tie Paint
Product Introduction:
HB53-5 Universal Epoxy Tie Paint is a two-pack, high-performance universal epoxy tie coat specifically engineered to serve as an essential intermediate layer in multi-coat marine and protective coating systems. Its primary function is to create a robust chemical and mechanical bond between anticorrosive primers (such as epoxy or zinc-rich primers) and antifouling topcoats, ensuring the entire coating system performs as an integrated, durable unit without intercoat delamination.
Designed for both newbuilding and maintenance/repair applications, this tie coat offers exceptional versatility and compatibility with a wide range of overcoating materials. It effectively bridges the gap between different coating chemistries, preventing issues such as peeling, blistering, or loss of adhesion that can arise when incompatible layers are applied directly over one another. With a VOC content of less than 400g/L, it balances environmental compliance with excellent application properties. The product is available in grey (2108G) and yellow (2108Y) for easy visual identification of coverage and uniform film thickness during application.
Key Features:
1.Excellent Intercoat Adhesion: Forms a tenacious bond between rust-preventive primers and antifouling paints, eliminating the risk of detachment in service.
2.Broad Compatibility: Can be applied over multiple primer types and is compatible with various topcoat systems, offering flexibility in coating system design.
3.Optimal Film Build: Designed for standard dry film thickness of 100μm (range 70–125μm), providing sufficient bridging capability without compromising curing or overcoating windows.
4.Low VOC Formulation: VOC <400g/L, reducing solvent emissions and improving worker safety during enclosed-space application (e.g., in tanks or holds).
Film Thickness & Theoretical Coverage:
| Parameter | Minimum | Standard | Maximum |
| Dry Film Thickness (DFT) | 70 μm | 100 μm | 125 μm |
| Wet Film Thickness (WFT) | 123 μm | 175 μm | 219 μm |
| Theoretical Coverage | 8.13 m²/L | 5.71 m²/L | 4.57 m²/L |
Application & Curing:
1.Mixing Ratio: 4:1 by volume (6.58:1 by mass).
2.Application Methods: Airless spray is recommended with a tip size of 0.46–0.66mm and output pressure ≥17MPa. Air spray (tip 2.0–3.0mm, ≥0.4MPa) and brush/roller (for small areas) are also acceptable. Thinner (HX-501) is not recommended except in exceptional cases (max 5% by volume).
3.Curing Characteristics: Cures effectively across a wide temperature range from -10°C to 40°C, with a pot life ranging from 16 hours at -10°C to just 3 hours at 40°C, allowing for flexible scheduling in various climates.
Surface Preparation:
*All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from contaminants.
*For primed surfaces, the primer must be dry and clean, and the tie coat must be applied within the primer's specified overcoating window (consult the primer PDS).
*For repair work, clean to P St3 (mechanical) or P Sa2.5 (abrasive blasting) per GB/T 8923.2-2008, feather edges, and apply a patch primer before the tie coat.
Packaging & Storage:
*Pack Size: Part A (24.0kg/16L in 20L container) + Part B (3.65kg/4L in 6L container).
*Flash Point: Part A >45°C; Part B >21°C; Mixed >37°C.
*Shelf Life: 12 months minimum at 25°C, stored in cool, dry, ventilated conditions away from heat and fire sources.
Limitations:
*Apply when surface temperature is at least 3°C above dew point and relative humidity is below 85%.
*Part A may generate gas if stored at high temperatures — take care when opening containers.
*Not suitable for continuous immersion or direct UV exposure without a topcoat.
*Avoid prolonged inhalation of vapors; ensure adequate ventilation and fire prevention during application.
