H06-51 Epoxy Ballast Tank Coating

Product Description

H06-51 Epoxy Ballast Tank Coating

Product Introduction:

H06-51 Epoxy Ballast Tank Coating  is a two-component, high-build epoxy primer designed as a multipurpose anticorrosive coating for marine applications, with particular suitability for ballast tank environments. Ballast tanks are among the most challenging spaces on a vessel – they are continuously exposed to seawater, subject to severe temperature fluctuations, and extremely difficult to access for maintenance once the vessel is in service. This coating has been specifically formulated to meet the rigorous demands of such service conditions, providing long-term corrosion protection with excellent resistance to water, abrasion, and cathodic disbondment.

This product features an exceptionally high volume solids content of 80%, enabling single-coat film builds of up to 320 μm DFT. This high-build capability significantly reduces the number of application coats required, minimizes labor costs, and shortens overall project timelines – a critical advantage in shipyard operations. Its low VOC formulation (<250 g/L) ensures compliance with modern environmental regulations while delivering superior protective performance.

The coating is compatible with controlled cathodic protection systems (both impressed current and sacrificial anode), making it an ideal choice for ballast tanks where such protection is commonly employed. It also demonstrates excellent low-temperature curing characteristics, allowing application in cooler climates and extending the working season for shipyards and repair facilities.

Key Features:

1.Ultra-High Solids: Volume solids of 80% ± 2%, enabling thick film builds (up to 320 μm DFT) in a single coat – significantly reducing application time and labor costs.

2.Outstanding Corrosion Resistance: Provides robust protection against seawater, moisture, and aggressive marine atmospheric conditions.

3.Excellent Abrasion Resistance: Formulated to withstand mechanical damage during ballasting/deballasting operations and cargo handling.

4.Low VOC: VOC content less than 250 g/L, meeting stringent environmental compliance standards.

5.Low-Temperature Application: Suitable for application at temperatures down to -5°C (though full curing requires above 5°C for optimal performance).

6.Cathodic Protection Compatible: Fully compatible with both impressed current and sacrificial anode cathodic protection systems.

7.Versatile Application: Suitable for airless spray (tip size 0.38–0.53 mm, pressure ≥17 MPa) and brush/roller for small areas.

Film Thickness & Theoretical Coverage:

Parameter Minimum Standard Maximum
Dry Film Thickness (DFT) 100 μm 150 μm 320 μm
Wet Film Thickness (WFT) 125 μm 188 μm 400 μm
Theoretical Coverage 8 m²/L 5.3 m²/L 2.5 m²/L

Recommended Use:

This coating is formulated for use in all parts of the vessel from keel to handrail, with particular emphasis on:

*Ballast tanks – providing long-term protection against seawater corrosion.

*Hull exterior (above and below waterline) as a primer in multi-coat systems.

*Internal compartments and void spaces where corrosion protection is critical.

*Newbuilding, maintenance & repair, and onboard maintenance projects.

Surface Preparation & Application:

1.Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from oil, grease, and soluble contaminants (per SSPC-SP1).

2.For newbuilding: abrasive blast clean to Sa2½ (GB/T 8923.1-2011). Weld seams may be cleaned to St3 using power tools. Apply coating before oxidation occurs on blasted surfaces.

3.For repair work: clean to P St3 by mechanical method or P Sa2½ by abrasive blasting (GB/T 8923.2-2008). Abrade surrounding areas to provide a key for subsequent coating application.

4.Apply when surface temperature is at least 3°C above dew point and relative humidity is below 85%.

5.No induction period is required after mixing.

Limitations:

*Curing: Will not cure adequately below -5°C. For maximum performance, curing temperature should be above 5°C.

*UV Exposure: Like all epoxy coatings, H06-51 will exhibit surface chalking upon prolonged UV exposure. It should be overcoated with a UV-resistant topcoat for exterior, sunlight-exposed applications.

*Drying and overcoating intervals may vary with on-site environmental conditions.

Storage & Packaging:

*Shelf life: 12 months minimum at 25°C (subject to re-inspection thereafter).

*Packaging: Part A – 25.4 kg / 16 L in 20 L container; Part B – 3.9 kg / 4 L in 6 L container.

*Flash point (mixed): > 31°C.
