Product Introduction:

H53-86 is a high-build, two-pack epoxy intermediate coating fortified with micaceous iron oxide (MIO) pigments, specifically engineered for heavy-duty corrosion protection of steel structures in atmospheric environments. The unique lamellar structure of MIO pigments creates a characteristic "labyrinth effect" within the cured film, significantly extending the penetration path for moisture, oxygen, and aggressive ions, thereby dramatically enhancing the barrier protection of the overall coating system. This intermediate coat delivers exceptional long-term anticorrosive performance, excellent abrasion resistance, and outstanding adhesion to both primer and topcoat layers, making it an indispensable component in multi-coat protective schemes. Formulated with a volume solids content of 70% ± 2% and a VOC level of less than 300 g/L, H53-86 combines high application efficiency with environmental responsibility. It offers excellent build characteristics, allowing standard dry film thicknesses of up to 125 μm per coat with a single application, significantly reducing the number of coats required to achieve specified system thicknesses. With a gloss finish, a mix ratio of 3.4 : 1 by volume (or 7.3 : 1 by mass), and good application versatility, this intermediate paint is widely used for the corrosion protection of steel structures in offshore facilities, petrochemical plants, power stations, bridges, and construction engineering. When integrated into a complete protective system, H53-86 provides the critical film thickness and barrier reinforcement needed to ensure long-term structural integrity and minimal maintenance in demanding atmospheric exposures. Surface Preparation:

All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, and free from contamination.

*Newbuilding: H53-86 should be applied over a recommended primer coating scheme. The primer surface must be dry and free from all contaminants, and H53-86 must be applied within the specified overcoating intervals (consult the relevant primer data sheet). Areas of damage to the primer should be prepared to the required standard (e.g., Sa2.5 or St3 as per GB/T 8923.1-2011) and patch primed prior to the application of H53-86. When applying H53-86 over zinc-rich primers, ensure the zinc primer is fully cured and the surface is clean, dry, and free from contamination and zinc salts before application.


*Repair: H53-86 may be applied directly over aged H53-86 coatings following thorough fresh water washing and degreasing, provided the existing coating is in an intact and tightly adherent condition. Loose or flaking coatings should be removed back to a firm edge, and an appropriate primer should be used to repair the area before application of the full coat.


Method Of Application:

*Airless Spray (Recommended): Tip size 0.38–0.53 mm, output pressure ≥17 MPa.

*Air Spray: Tip size 2.0–3.0 mm, output pressure ≥0.4 MPa.

*Brush / Roller: Suitable for small area application only.


Mixing Instructions:

The two components must be mixed thoroughly in the specified ratio of 3.4 : 1 by volume or 7.3 : 1 by mass. No induction period is required after mixing. The mixed product must be used within its specified pot life.


Thinner and Cleaner:

Thinning is not generally recommended. In exceptional circumstances, use HX-501 (up to a maximum of 5% by volume). HX-501 is also recommended as the equipment cleaner.


Flash Point:

The product has a high flash point, with Part A and the mixed paint exceeding 31°C, and Part B exceeding 28°C, ensuring safe handling under normal conditions.


Storage And Shelf Life:

Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, protected from direct sunlight, fire, and heat sources. Containers must remain tightly sealed. At 25℃, the product has a minimum shelf life of 12 months (subject to re-inspection thereafter).


Limitations

*For maximum performance, ambient curing temperature should be above 5℃.


*In common with all epoxy-based coatings, H53-86 will exhibit chalking of the film upon UV exposure. It should therefore be topcoated for exterior applications.


*Apply only in good weather conditions. The surface temperature must be at least 3℃ above the dew point, and ambient relative humidity should be below 85%.


*Drying times and overcoating intervals may vary due to on-site environmental conditions.


*Avoid prolonged inhalation of solvent vapors or paint spray. Prevent skin and eye contact. Ensure adequate ventilation and fire prevention measures during application.
