Product Description
B40-EF2 Marine Copper-Free Antifouling Coating
Product Introduction:
The B40-EF2 is a high-performance, single-pack antifouling coating engineered to deliver exceptional long-term fouling control without the use of copper or organotin compounds. As a copper-free self-polishing copolymer (SPC) system, it offers an environmentally progressive solution for vessel hull protection while maintaining excellent biocidal efficacy against a broad spectrum of marine organisms—including barnacles, algae, slime, diatoms, and tubeworms. This advanced formulation is based on a synergistic organic biocide package that provides reliable, controlled release throughout the coating's service life, delivering effective antifouling performance for up to 60 months depending on the applied dry film thickness and the vessel's trading pattern. With a high volume solids content of 70 percent and VOC levels below 250 grams per litre, this product enables high-build application with reduced solvent emissions, contributing to both operational efficiency and environmental compliance. The B40-EF2 is available in multiple colours, dries to a matt finish, and is designed for straightforward application by airless spray. It is suitable for all stages of a vessel's lifecycle—newbuilding construction, major refurbishment, and in-service maintenance—and is fully compatible with a wide range of anticorrosive primer systems. By effectively preventing biofouling, this coating helps maintain hull smoothness, reduce fuel consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions over the vessel's operational life.
For application, airless spray is the recommended method, using a tip size range of 0.48 to 0.63 millimetres and an output pressure of at least 17 MPa. Air spray is also acceptable, with a tip size of 2.0 to 3.0 millimetres and an output pressure of at least 0.4 MPa. Brush or roller application is suitable only for small-area touch-ups and repairs. Thinner is generally not recommended; however, in exceptional circumstances where adjustment is absolutely necessary, BX-801 may be added at a maximum of 5 percent by volume. All application equipment should be cleaned with HX-501 after use.
Intended Uses:
*Long-term antifouling protection for commercial and naval vessel hulls, including tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, and passenger vessels.
*Newbuilding construction and major dry-docking refurbishment.
*Maintenance, repair, and on-board touch-up applications.

Pack Size, Flash Point & Shelf Life:
The product is supplied as a single component in a 20-litre container, containing 25 kg net weight (equivalent to 16 litres by volume). It has a flash point greater than 28°C. When stored in cool, dry, well-ventilated conditions away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and open flames, with the container kept tightly sealed, the shelf life is a minimum of 12 months at 25°C; storage life should be confirmed by actual inspection after this period.
Surface Preparation:
All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, and free from any contamination. Remove oil, grease, soluble salts, and other foreign matter by high-pressure fresh water washing or appropriate fresh water rinsing, followed by solvent cleaning in accordance with SSPC-SP1 standards. For optimum adhesion and performance, the substrate should be thoroughly dried before application.
Application & Handling Notes:
Being a single-pack product, B40-EF2 requires no mixing and has no induction period – it is ready for use after thorough stirring. For best results, airless spray is the recommended application method, using a tip size of 0.48 to 0.63 millimetres and an output pressure of at least 17 MPa. Air spray may also be used with a tip size of 2.0 to 3.0 millimetres and an output pressure of at least 0.4 MPa. Brush or roller application is acceptable only for small-area touch-ups and repairs. Thinning is generally not recommended; if necessary due to unusual site conditions, BX-801 may be added at a maximum of 5 percent by volume. All equipment should be cleaned with HX-501 immediately after use.
Newbuilding, Major Refurbishment & Repair:
For newbuilding and major refurbishment projects, B40-EF2 should be applied over a recommended anticorrosive primer system. The primer surface must be clean, dry, and free from contamination, and the B40-EF2 topcoat must be applied within the specified overcoating interval as detailed in the relevant primer product data sheets. Damaged or broken areas should be prepared to the required standard (e.g., St3 hand-tool cleaning) and primed before the full B40-EF2 coat is applied.
For repair work, upon vessel entry into dry dock, the entire area should be cleaned with close high-pressure fresh water washing as soon as possible and before the surface dries out. For alternative surface preparation methods, consult Xiamen Sunrui. Corroded areas should be repaired with the recommended anticorrosive primer system, and B40-EF2 should be applied within the overcoating interval specified for that primer.
Important Limitations:
Coating lifetime is directly proportional to the thickness applied. The antifouling performance of this product depends upon achieving the specified dry film thickness. Apply only in good weather: relative humidity must be below 85%, and the substrate temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point. Drying times and overcoating intervals may change according to environmental factors.
Safety Precautions:
Avoid prolonged inhalation of solvent vapours or paint mist. Prevent skin and eye contact by wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, protective clothing). Ensure adequate ventilation during application and observe standard fire prevention measures, noting the flash point above 28°C. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and open flames, with containers tightly sealed when not in use.
