Product Description

E47 Marine Inorganic Zinc Silicate Shop Primer (Thin Plates Type)

Product Introduction:

E47 (Thin Plates Type) is a two-pack, zinc-pigmented ethyl silicate-based shop primer, specially formulated for the temporary protection of thin steel plates during storage, handling, and fabrication. It delivers outstanding long-term weathering resistance, effectively preventing flash rust and corrosion even under demanding marine environments. A key feature of this thin-plate variant is its exceptional compatibility with modern laser-arc hybrid welding and cutting processes, ensuring minimal interference and clean edges during fabrication. With a low VOC content of less than 645 g/L and low toxicity, it meets stringent environmental and occupational health standards. The coating cures rapidly to a hard, matt, inorganic film that provides robust protection while allowing easy removal or overcoating later. This primer is specifically engineered to minimize heat distortion and edge buildup on thinner gauges, making it the ideal choice for shipyards and steel service centers processing lightweight steel plates.

This two-pack product is supplied with a mix ratio of 1:1 by volume (2.3:1 by mass). It dries to a matt finish with a volume solids content of 30% ± 2%. For application, airless spray is recommended using a tip size of 0.38–0.53 mm and an output pressure of ≥15 MPa; air spray is also suitable with a tip size of 1.5–2.0 mm and pressure ≥0.4 MPa. Brush or roller application is limited to small touch-up areas only. Thinning is not recommended for routine use—if absolutely necessary, X-107 may be added at a maximum of 5% by volume; X-107 is also used as the equipment cleaner. No induction period is required. For storage, keep the product in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, protected from sunlight, heat, and open flames, with containers tightly sealed. Shelf life is 12 months minimum for Part A and 6 months minimum for Part B at 25°C (subject to re-inspection thereafter). Packaging: Part A is supplied as 18.9 kg / 10 L in a 20 L container; Part B is 8.2 kg / 10 L in a 10 L container. Flash point: >14°C for Part A, Part B, and mixed paint.

Intended Uses:

*As a shop primer for the protection of thin steel plates.

*Provides long-term weathering protection during storage and fabrication.

*Exhibits excellent laser-arc hybrid welding and cutting performance.

*Low health hazard for safer handling.

Surface Preparation:

All surfaces must be cleaned with high-pressure fresh water or fresh water wash, followed by solvent cleaning per SSPC-SP1 to remove all oil, grease, soluble contaminants, and other foreign matter. Steel surfaces should be prepared to Sa2.5 (GB/T 8923.1-2011) using automatic blasting/spraying equipment. A suitable abrasive mixture—typically steel grit (0.6–1.0 mm particle size) combined with steel shot (0.6–1.4 mm particle size)—is recommended to achieve appropriate surface roughness. E47 must be applied promptly after blasting, before any oxidation occurs on the steel surface. If oxidation has already developed, the affected area must be re-blasted to the same Sa2.5 standard.

Application Limitations:

*Do not apply when relative humidity is below 50%, as curing will be significantly retarded.

*E47 is not recommended for use as a touch-up primer after fabrication.

*Avoid prolonged inhalation of solvent vapors and paint mist. Prevent skin and eye contact. Ensure adequate ventilation and take fire-prevention measures during application.
