Marine Lighting-Common Electric Light Sources

Commonly used electric light sources can be divided into two categories.

(1) Thermal radiation light sources, such as incandescent lamps and halogen lamps.

Ordinary incandescent lamps and halogen cycle incandescent lamps use electrical energy to heat the filament to the incandescent level to produce thermal radiation light.

Incandescent lamps

Simple structure, flexible use, can be ignited instantly, no flicker, dimmable, can be ignited at any position, cheap, etc. But the life is not long and the vibration resistance is poor.

Halogen lamps

Small size and high power, easy to carry, suitable for lighting large spaces requiring high illumination. Such as large-area lighting on the open deck of a ship. Horizontal installation is required.

(2) Gas discharge light sources, such as fluorescent lamps, high-pressure mercury lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps, metal halide lamps and mercury xenon lamps.

Gas discharge lamps generally have devices that can generate higher ignition voltage and limit discharge current, such as ballasts and triggers.

Fluorescent lamps (commonly known as fluorescent lamps)

Fluorescent lamps are a preheated low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp. It has the advantages of low surface brightness, low surface temperature, high luminous efficiency, long life, good color rendering, and uniform light flux distribution.

High-pressure mercury lamp

High luminous efficiency, low cost, long life, shock resistance, and not affected by harsh outdoor weather conditions. However, a short voltage drop of more than 5% can cause self-extinguishing, and it still takes 5 to 10 minutes to re-ignite. High-pressure mercury lamps are also not suitable for places with frequent switching.

Metal halide lamp

It is a new light source with higher luminous efficiency and better light color. Because metal halides are easier to excite, the luminous efficiency is higher. They are all equipped with special ballasts or leakage transformers or triggers.

High-pressure sodium lamp

High luminous efficiency, low ultraviolet radiation, good fog permeability, good light flux maintenance, shock resistance, and working at -40C~100C. The disadvantages are basically the same as those of high-pressure mercury lamps.

Xenon lamps and mercury-xenon lamps

It is an inert gas arc discharge lamp. It starts faster than metal vapor discharge lamps and can emit 80% of the light at the moment of ignition. It has the characteristics of high power, white light and high brightness. But the light efficiency is low and the life is short.

A proper amount of mercury is filled into the xenon lamp tube to become a mercury xenon lamp. This lamp has the advantages of fast start-up, short stabilization time, easy restart and good light transmittance. And the luminous efficiency and life are also high.
