Core Tip: Container transportation is the main driving force of global trade, accounting for 80% of the total global freight volume. Data shows that in 1980, global container transportation carried 10.2 billion tons of goods, and by 2017, container transportation volume had significantly increased to around 1.83 billion tons. In recent years, due to frequent incidents of container loss, transportation safety has received increasing attention.

Container transportation is the main driving force of global trade, accounting for 80% of the total global freight volume.

Data shows that in 1980, global container transportation carried 102 million tons of goods, and by 2017, container transportation volume had significantly increased to around 1.83 billion tons.

In recent years, due to frequent incidents of container loss, transportation safety has received increasing attention.

The loss of shipping containers can have an impact on the economy and endanger the safety of ship transportation. If dangerous goods are contained inside the container, it can also pose a threat to the environment.

The frequent occurrence of container loss incidents goes against the goal of zero container damage pursued by stakeholders in the container logistics supply chain.

Note:  Number of containers lost at sea

The 8th meeting of the Comprehensive Compliance Subcommittee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) (III 8) and the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) have prepared an investigation report on the 2019 container drowning incident on the ultra large container ship "MSC ZOE". The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has evaluated the relevant safety issues of the lost container incident and established a special working group.

This project is composed of multiple experts who explore the issue of lost containers at sea from three aspects: operation, design, and maintenance. Lashing Software is considered the best solution to ensure the safety of container sea transportation.

The members of the working group are refining the provisions of Unified Requirement C6 (UR C6) to standardize the performance standards and requirements of Lashing Software.

In addition, members of the working group submitted documents to the 8th meeting of the IMO Cargo and Container Transport Subcommittee (CCC 8) to demonstrate that Lashing Software is a supplementary tool for container stowage and safety plans.

At the same time, members of the working group prepared a new proposal and submitted it to the 107th session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 107) for the introduction of Lashing Software.

Lashing Software plays a core role in improving container shipping safety, and the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) is developing unified requirements to ensure that Last Software meets performance standards and compliance requirements.

From a design perspective, the working group is developing UR C7 to ensure certification and approval of container safety systems.

In order to promote the development of the UR system, the working group specifically considered the gap between the approval and certification rules for container safety systems by members of the International Association of Classification Societies.

Maintaining container stowage and safety systems is another aspect considered by the International Association of Classification Societies, and UR C8 will focus on uniform standards and requirements for container wear and corrosion.

The C6, C7, and C8 series documents are expected to be completed in 2024 and implemented in 2025.

Further evaluation of the causes of container losses indicates that dynamic assessment of containers will become a direction for the International Association of Classification Societies to strengthen research.
