Explanation of technical terms of tufted woven carpet


Face or pile weight: pile weight or pile weight: the amount of yarn used for carpet pile (above the ground) is the pile weight or pile weight, expressed in ounces / square yard.

Pile height: refers to the height of pile circle or pile, expressed in inches and decimal form, accurate to one thousandth of an inch (for example, 0.187 inch). The height is measured from the beginning of the yarn protruding from the ground to its top. In the case of woven carpets, the pile height is also known as the height of the pile or the size of the pile, because the coil is woven around the metal pile. 

Pile thickness: the thickness of carpet pile under standard pressure is pile thickness, which can be measured by thickness meter. The thickness of fluff is very different from the height of fluff, because the thickness of fluff is measured under the weight pressure of thickness gauge pressing plate.  

Total weight: the total weight is the weight of the whole carpet, including the weight of suede, adhesive substrate (such as latex) and ground material.

 

Explanation of special terms for tufted carpet

 

Gauge stitch distance: the distance between the two needles in the width direction of the tufting machine is the stitch distance, expressed in inches. The 5 / 64 inch pitch is very close or very high, and the 5 / 16 inch pitch is very thin. The higher the needle pitch, the more loops or fluff per inch on the carpet.

Needles per inch: needles per inch in the width direction of tufting machine. A 4-pin / inch tufting machine can achieve a 1 / 4-inch stitch distance.  

Stitches per inch: stitches per inch in the length direction. 5 pins / inch is a small number of pins, 12 pins / inch is a large number of pins 

Loop or tufts per square inch: the number of loops or tufts per square inch is obtained by multiplying the number of stitches per inch by the number of stitches per inch. For example, if the number of stitches per inch is 8 stitches / inch (1 / 8 inch pitch), and the number of stitches per inch is 7 stitches / inch, then the number of square inch loops is 56 (8 * 7 = 56). This feature can also be called fluffy density or tufted density.

 

Explanation of terms used only for woven carpets

 

Pitch : pitch is the number of warps per 27 inches in the width direction of the loom. Pitch is equal to the number of stitches in tufted carpet multiplied by 27. A carpet with 270 pitches has 10 warps per inch. In metric units, the unit of pitch is the number of warps per 10 cm wide.

Rows per inch: the number of loops per inch in the loom length direction is the number of rows per inch. It's equivalent to the number of stitches per inch of tufted carpet.

Loops or turns per square inch: divide the number of pitches by 27 (to get the number of warps per inch), and multiply by the number of rows per inch to get the number of loops or fluff per square inch. If the number of coils or fluff per square inch is 20, the structure of the carpet is sparse; if the number of coils or fluff per square inch is 140, the structure of the carpet is tight. For example, if the pitch of a woven carpet is 243 and the number of rows per inch is 10 rows / inch, then the number of square inch loops or fluff should be 90 (243 / 27 = 9 warp / inch; 9 * 10 = 90). This property is also known as pile density.
